In the middle of the 18th century, there apparently was a very real trend of women in Europe (specifically the Styria region of Upper Austria in this film) who wanted to commit suicide, but instead of doing it themselves, they would perpetrate heinous acts like killing children so the state would execute them instead. That’s when and how this film opens, with a woman in 1750 committing infanticide, and then one of her fingers immediately being given as a fertility charm to Agnes (Anja Plaschg) on the day of her wedding to Wolf (David Schied). Agnes could be given a whole severed hand and never get pregnant though, not with the way Wolf does things in bed. He also spent all their money on the house they live in, which Agnes isn’t enjoying being in charge of, especially because it’s so close to her domineering mother-in-law (Maria Hofstatter). Things just get worse for Agnes as the marriage goes on and she starts to suffer from severe depression. Don't be sad though, Anja’s three beautiful Bs are truly the bright spots in this dark tale, and you’ll be bathed in your own baby batter by the time it’s finished!
