Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) is one saucy French film! This period piece takes place on a small island off of the French coast in the eighteenth century. A female painter named Marianne (Neomie Merlant) is hired by a wealthy woman to come and paint a portrait of her daughter Heloise (Adele Haenel), before Heloise's wedding to some rich dude. The twist is, Heloise doesn't want to get married, and after having to leave her life in a convent, thinks that not getting her portrait painted is her best chance at preventing that from happening. So, Marianne has to hang out with Heloise, while secretly painting her from memory every night. The two young women become very close...like, very close. Yes, we're talking lesbian close, and eventually Heloise poses for the painting. There's no chance this romance is going to work, so we're heading for a sad ending, but there are plenty of leers before the tears.
