A prizewinner at Italy’s prestigious Venice International Film Festival, the jet-black comedy L'anima gemella (2002) chronicles a young woman’s efforts to accomplish supernatural schadenfreude. The wealthy and self-interested Teresa (Valentina Cervi) seeks to steal away her cousin’s (Violante Placido) new boyfriend, Tonino (Michele Venitucci), but the plan hits a hitch when the young man repents and goes crawling back to his beloved Maddalena (Placido). Enraged, Teresa seeks the help of a village witch, who cooks up a spell that allows her to be transported into her cousin’s body. With the body of one lover and the soul of another, Teresa sets out to determine whether Tonino’s affections are skin deep. All things being equal, you can hardly blame poor Tonino for not being able to make up his mind. Cervi and Placido look like equally attractive options as they cavort in the bathtub and bedroom.
