The future is much like the present, only the coming times are markedly worse in almost every aspect of human interaction. At least, that is what a few years after tomorrow looks like to many of the cinematic art’s keenest visionaries. Director Michael Winterbottom casts a cold eye on post-Space Age society in Code 46 (2003). Dystopia has spread apace with urban sprawl. The repressive control of a totalitarian and hidden governing body has infiltrated and nullified every benumbed citizen’s mind and libido. Does the human soul, the individual spirit, have a chance to survive? Only if the watchers can be seduced back to real life and freedom by the rebel miscreants they have been ordered to subdue.
