If you were going to cast any woman as the lead in a TV comedy series about a middle aged couple trying to find their way towards true love, you really couldn’t do any better than casting Dame Judi Dench as your female lead. Cast her real life husband, the late Michael Williams, as her male counterpart and you’ve got a truly well performed TV show on your hands. A Fine Romance is truly British; a little dry in the humor department, a little slow in the action department and well put together from top to bottom. In an era when other ‘older audience’ shows such as The Good Life and To The Manor Born were going great guns in the British market, A Fine Romance stands tall with the best of them. And talking of standing tall, this series put bread on the table of a few actresses who’ve shed their skin for the camera at various times, namely Margaret Whitton (the evil team owner in Major League), Susan Penhaligan (who likes schmearing lipstick on her nips, apparently) and Judi Dench. Yes, Dame Judi herself went out in the late 60’s and took off her top in A Midsummer Night’s Dream so we could see her green-painted ta-ta’s. There really is nothing like a dame…
