Born in Leningrad in the USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia, for those of you who are geographical groupies), Yekaterina Golubeva made sure her beautiful face didn’t stay secluded in her native country. After appearing in a few films, she met and married writer and director Sharumas Bartas, who put the doe-eyed honey into four of his films, all of which earned him some of his 12 wins and 27 nominations he garnered throughout his career. She graced the screen in Three Days (1991), The Corridor (1995), Few of Us (1996), and The House (1997). Allegedly, French director Leos Carax saw Yekaterina in Three Days, decided he was in love, and cast her in the role of Isabelle in Pola X (1999) with Catherine Deneuve (Bartas was still along for the ride at this point, playing a chef in the flick). She’s naked in the film, and involved in an intimate, real-sex scene with her co-star, but there’s a body double in there, so not everything you’re seeing (and we see everything) belongs to the Russian rouser. Somewhere along the way, Yekaterina, who also went by Katya or Katia, lost Bartas in the fray and the actress hooked up with Carax, staying in France to work. She was full-frontal naked (no double), playing the role of Katia in Bruno Dumont’s Twentynine Palms (2003). Unfortunately, Yekaterina died in August 2001 at the age of 44. Carax dedicated his film Holy Motors (2012) to the actress, quite the homage, since it picked up 29 awards and an additional 71 nominations from around the globe.
