In 1981 rock-rooted cable channel MTV signed on with The Buggles's new-wave clip "Video Killed the Radio Star" and, in short order, proceeded to prove that prescient pop ditty true. Four years later MTV launched its own Video Music Awards extravaganza, and then, in 1992, the network reached out to conquer even bigger screens via the MTV Movie Awards. Since then the "MMAs" have featured inventive parodies, splashy musical performances, and, most skin-portantly, the cream of Hollywood's up-and-coming starlet crop busting out of designer frocks from the red carpet entrance through prizes given for "Best Kiss" and "Best Fight" and on to various gland finales.
