Smiley-faced optimists addicted to positive thinking love to crow that God never closes one door without opening another, an outlook on life that is shared to inspirational effect by Elizabethtown (2005). Life seems to be over for a young corporate hotshot whose brightest brainstorm results in his parent company going belly up and in his trophy girlfriend dumping his pathetic posterior. Could things possibly get any worse? Well, yes, in fact. Sad sack’s dad dies, and the sole son must now revisit his hick hometown for the funeral and other morbid details. Certainly the thought must arise: Why not just jump down in the hole with the old man and end it all now? Because a new door is opening, and a quick-witted, chatty chick has her hand on the knob.
