The Tribe (2014)

The Tribe (2014) is an experimental Ukrainian drama filmed entirely in Ukrainian sign language, without the use of subtitles. Starring an entirely deaf cast, this grim flick follows Serhiy (Grigorly Fesenko), a young deaf man struggling to fit in at his new boarding school. While there, Serhiy figures out that the school is run by a gang of delinquents who rob the locals, beat up anyone who stands in their way, and even rent out the schoolgirls to horny truckers. Serhiy subsequently falls in with this rough crowd, including the power hungry leader King (Oleksandr Osadchiy), who routinely pimps out the sweet Anya (Yana Novikova) and the harder edged Svetka (Rosa Babiy). As Sergey proves his toughness and loyalty to his felonious friends, passing the hazing ritual test, he eventually works his way up the chain of command to earn the task of being a pimp to his gal pals. Like any straight teenager, Serhiy has a hankering for some warm, wet vagina, so he scraps up enough cash to pay for a hook-up with Anya, and the two hump their way to becoming regular lovers. While Serhiy and his buddies fail to see a brighter future, the girls are hoping to ditch their home country of the Ukraine for a future in Italy. But it looks like an unexpected pregnancy will shatter one of the girl’s dreams to leave. Critics praised this one for the whole sign language thing, but weren't all that enamored with the plot.
